Dismantling/Fixing Door Mirror

This guide was provided kindly by Matt Bryson Please note neither the webmaster or the author accept any responsibility for any damage you may cause to your vehicle or the accuracy of the information contained in this guide due to the manufacturer making various changes throughout the production life of the vehicle

One day my door mirror decided to stop folding down anymore. It would fold in fine, but then would be stuck. The passenger side worked fine, but I would have to open the window and force the drivers side mirror down by hand. As the motor was working fine in one direction, I assumed it would just be a case of a loose wire and would be easy to fix! I couldn't find any info on the net about the door mirror and it took bloody ages to work out how the thing worked / what could be wrong, so incase anyone else has the same issue, or similar door mirror issues here is what I did to fix it. If you have any questions e-mail me at mattbryson55@hotmail.com

You will need: 10mm socket, medium size and small size cross head screwdriver and some super glue!

1. Remove the Mirror
Fold the mirror up so you can get to the two bolts that hold it to the car. You will need a 10mm socket to get them out.

2. Unplug the wires
Push the catch in on the cable block and wiggle the block out of the mirror.

Be careful not to loose the wires down the inside of the door!

3. Remove the plastic cover
The base of the mirror has a plastic cover that simply slides off.

4. Remove the metal base
Undo the 3 screws to remove the metal base of the mirror

5. Undo screw holding motor housing in place
remove the large screw on the right hand side.

6. Remove Glass
Flip the mirror over and gently push the top of the mirror inwards with you fingers so the bottom sticks out a little. You should be able to see 2 small indentations on the undeside of the glass pannel, slide a scredriver in to one of the indentation and very gently leaver the mirror upwards. It is simply clipped in at both these points and should come free quite easily.

Once its free lift the mirror up and un clip it from the two catches at the top, it should just slide out if you get the angle right.

7. Remove outer plastic edge
Undo the 4 screws holding the plastic edge in place and remove the edge, it may have a little catch at the bottom left cliping it to the mirror casing, just leaver it apart to get the outer edge piece off.

8. Remove the plate and motor that adjusts the glass.
Undo the 3 screws holding the plate and motor (grey and yellow/white plastic part)that hold/adjust the positon of the glass and then remove them.

9. Remove the tray.
Undo the 4 screws holding the plastic tray in place that the previous part sat on and remove the tray.

10. Remove the motor housing.
Now undo the final screw and slide the motor housing out of the plastic mirror casing. Then pop off the back of the plastic housing around the motor, there are 3 simple cathces that you can prise open with a screw driver, one on the one side and two on the other.

11. Remove the switch plate.
You can now get to the blue circuit board that has a rotary switch stuck to it. Prise the circuit board (and white pastic ring on the inside of it) up off the shaft. Use a scredriver to leaver it off if its stiff.

12. Open the switch plate.
Once its off, you can carefully pop off the white plastic ring that is in the center of the circuit board. Simply depress the catches on the top and push them in so the ring drops off the bottom. Inside the white ring should be 2 connectors fixd to the base of the ring. These controll the movement of the mirror - one for opening and one for closing. In my case one had come loose, and no longer pushed up against the base of the circuit board, thus not connecting the circuit to move the mirror. Cheap and Easy fix. Super glue. Place the metal connector back on the the lugs that it sits on, and drop a dab of super glue on the lugs to hold it in place. I glued both connectors in just to stop the other from comming loose in the future.

13. Re-assemble.
Re-assemble the mirror in reverse order and hopefully your mirror works and you just saved yourself a good few hundred quid!.
